Since the early-’90s underground warehouse parties, through the Grateful Dead tour years and decades of festival camping, I’ve gone from sweating to freezing at many shows. The warm layer you bring decides how the end of the night goes.
So which one should it be: a hoodie, a jacket, a pashmina or a rain shell? Here’s how I think about it.
The short answer
- Most nights: a heavyweight hoodie.
- Rain or real wind: a packable shell over the hoodie.
- Indoor show with no coat check: a pashmina or a hoodie you can tie on.
- Bitter cold: a hoodie under a warmer jacket, and accept carrying it.
What your warm layer actually has to do
A warm layer at a show has four jobs: keep you warm in line, be easy to carry while you dance, keep you warm on the walk home, and ideally be something you can sleep in at camp. Very few layers do all four. A good hoodie comes closest.
Hoodie: pros and cons
Why fabric weight matters
A thin promo hoodie won’t do much at 3 a.m. Look for a real fleece pullover. Ours are printed on the Cotton Heritage M2580, a heavier fleece hoodie, which is why I picked it. For fit and fabric details, see the festival hoodie guide.
Pullover vs zip-up
A pullover is warmer and simpler, with no zipper to fail. A zip-up is easier to vent when you’re warming up. For shows, I prefer a pullover and just take it off.
Downsides
Hoodies aren’t waterproof, and they’re bulky in a packed room. That’s why the shell and the tie-around-the-waist trick exist.
Jackets: bomber, windbreaker, puffer
- Windbreaker: light, blocks wind, packs small. Not warm on its own.
- Bomber: looks good, moderately warm, awkward to carry when you’re dancing.
- Puffer: very warm, way too hot indoors, and a pain to keep track of.
Jackets win on wind and rain. They lose on carrying them all night and on being something you’d want to sleep in.
Pashmina: pros and cons
Light, packable and useful for sun, dust and a bit of warmth. It’s great at summer festivals and indoor shows. It isn’t real warmth once it gets properly cold.
Rain shell: the add-on, not the replacement
A packable shell doesn’t keep you warm by itself, but over a fleece hoodie it’s the best cold-and-wet combination there is. If there’s any chance of rain, bring both.
Comparison table
| Layer | Warmth | Packability | Rain | Sleep in it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heavyweight hoodie | High | Medium (tie it on) | Low | Yes |
| Windbreaker | Low | High | Medium | No |
| Bomber | Medium | Low | Low | No |
| Puffer | Very high | Low | Medium | Sometimes |
| Pashmina | Low | Very high | None | As a blanket |
| Rain shell | Low alone | High | High | No |
What I bring, by situation
- Indoor winter show: hoodie, worn in and tied on or checked. See winter rave outfits.
- Summer camping festival: light tees by day, hoodie and shell for nights. See the festival camping clothes checklist.
- Fall camping or a cold desert venue: hoodie, beanie, pants and a shell, every night. See cold-weather festival outfits.
What to look for in a rave hoodie
Heavy enough fleece to be warm, a cut you can move in, and a design you’re happy to wear on the walk home and the next morning at camp. Browse all our rave hoodies. A few I’d start with: Lost My Friends, Found the Drop, I Don’t Dance, I Headbang and Girls Are Making Riddim.
Packing for a cold night? See our cold night hoodies, heavyweight fleece for the walk back to camp.

FAQ: Rave hoodie vs jacket
Should I bring a jacket to a rave?
For most shows a heavyweight hoodie is the better pick, because it’s warm, easy to tie on while you dance, and comfortable on the walk home. Bring a packable shell or windbreaker too if rain or strong wind is in the forecast.
Is a hoodie warm enough for a festival?
A real fleece hoodie with pants and a beanie is warm enough for most festival nights. For very cold or wet nights, add a rain shell or warmer jacket over it.
Should I bring a hoodie or a pashmina to a rave?
A pashmina is lighter and great for sun, dust and mild nights. A hoodie is much warmer. For summer, a pashmina may be enough. For cool nights or the walk home, bring a hoodie.
What’s the best hoodie weight for festivals?
Look for a true fleece pullover rather than a thin promo hoodie. Heavier fleece holds warmth on cold nights and doubles as a sleep layer at camp.
Can you wear a hoodie inside a rave?
Yes, but most people get hot on the floor. Wear it in line, tie it around your waist or check it while you dance, and put it back on before you head out.
