The hoodie for the second half of the night

I've gone from sweating to freezing at many shows. It happens the same way every time: you dance through a hot set, the sun's long gone, you step outside or start the walk back to camp in a damp shirt, and the temperature you didn't notice for three hours shows up all at once. After decades of festival camping, going back to the Grateful Dead tour years, the one thing I never leave at camp is a real hoodie.

Every hoodie here is a Cotton Heritage M2580 fleece pullover, not a thin promo hoodie. It's warm enough for a cold line, tied around your waist on the floor, and comfortable to sleep in at camp when the night drops further than the forecast said. Big print on the back, small piece on the chest.

How I layer on a cold night

  • A light tee to dance in.
  • The hoodie on before you walk out, not after you're already cold.
  • Joggers or pants, dry socks and a beanie.
  • A packable rain shell over the hoodie if it's wet.

More on this in cold-weather festival outfits, winter rave outfits, the festival camping clothes checklist and the festival hoodie guide.

The M2580 runs small. Size up, especially if you'll layer under it.

FAQ

Is a hoodie warm enough for festival camping?

A heavyweight fleece hoodie with pants, a beanie and dry socks handles most festival nights. Add a rain shell when it's wet.

Can I sleep in a festival hoodie?

Yes. A clean, dry fleece hoodie is one of the best sleep layers at camp. Don't sleep in what you danced in.

Do these hoodies run small?

Yes. Size up, especially if you plan to layer.
