Your shirt is what people see. Your shoes decide whether you make it to the closer. I've danced on warehouse concrete in the '90s, walked lots on Dead tour, and spent decades camping at festivals. I've ruined my feet every way you can. Here's what I learned.
The short answer
Wear closed-toe, broken-in shoes with real cushioning that you don't care about getting wrecked. That's it. Everything below is detail.
By type of night
Indoor club or warehouse show
Concrete is brutal. You want cushioning more than style. A comfortable sneaker you've already worn for a couple of weeks is perfect. Skip anything brand new; new shoes plus six hours standing is how blisters happen.
Bass show with a pit
Closed toes, laces tied tight, nothing with a heel. Someone will step on you. Low-top skate shoes or running shoes both work. Skip open sandals completely. If you're the kind who heads to the rail, read my guide on how to dress for a headbanger show.
Camping festival
Bring two pairs, minimum. One for dancing and one for camp and rain. Lightweight waterproof boots or trail shoes for mud and long walks, and a dry pair for later. Festival walking adds up to miles a day. My full list is in the festival camping clothes checklist.
Cold-weather show
Wool socks matter more than the shoe. Cold feet end nights early. Pair them with a real hoodie and you're set; see cold-weather festival outfits.
What to skip
- Brand-new shoes, ever.
- White shoes you love. They won't survive.
- Flip-flops and slides on the floor. Fine at camp, not in a crowd.
- Platform anything if you plan to move. Ankles are expensive.
Socks and small stuff
Pack spare socks, more than you think. Moleskin or blister tape lives in my pocket. Swap socks halfway through a long night if you can; it feels like new legs.
Then build up from there
Once your feet are handled, the rest is easy: a light tee to dance in and a hoodie for the walk out. Browse our rave shirts ($32, $36 for 2XL and up) and rave hoodies ($64, $68 for 2XL and up). Shipping is $4.95 for tees, $6.95 for hoodies, free on orders of $75 or more.
FAQ
What are the best shoes for a rave?
Closed-toe, cushioned, broken-in sneakers you don't mind getting dirty. Comfort beats style after hour three.
Can I wear sandals to a rave?
Not on the floor. Crowds step on feet. Keep sandals for camp.
What shoes should I bring to a camping festival?
At least two pairs: comfortable sneakers for dancing and waterproof boots or trail shoes for mud, rain and long walks, plus extra socks.
